Designing for the Future: Why Interior Designers Need to Embrace Sustainability

Reflecting on a recent award we received for our work in interior design, I began to ponder our role in society and the impact we can make in the world.

As I mingled with distinguished architects and designers at the event, I realized that with recognition comes responsibility – not just towards the next generation, but also towards Mother Earth. The spaces we inhabit have been borrowed from our children, and we must leave behind a world that is sustainable and thriving.

While we have tried to reduce the environmental impact of our designs, we haven’t been vocal enough about it. As professionals, it is not enough to just practice sustainable design; we must also actively promote it and increase awareness among our peers and clients. It’s time to take a stand and design for energy efficiency, use materials with low environmental impact, reduce waste , and choose quality products that will enhance longevity.

We must also be innovative in our approach to design, creating flexible spaces that can adapt to changing times without becoming redundant or wasteful.
For example: There are so many abandoned buildings around the world that could be repurposed into cultural centers, housing or co-working spaces, or even healthcare facilities. We need to ask ourselves why we are creating new structures when so much can be repurposed and given new life.

Of course, there are challenges when clients or circumstances dictate the direction of a project, but as professionals, we must take the lead in these conversations and advocate for sustainable design solutions. We owe it to ourselves, future generations, and the planet to do our part in creating a more sustainable future.

In writing this post, I hope to start a conversation and inspire more people to take action and help change the status quo.

Let’s work together to make a positive impact on the world around us.
